POP vs IMAP

If you are launching Apple Mail for the first time, it will open a New Account setup window as shown below. If the account setup does not start, open the Mail menu and go to Preferences... then click the Create an account button in the lower-left corner (the button is a "+" symbol). This will start the same New Account setup as seen below. Click Continue.

Select the account type you would like to use. For more information on which account type to use, see our POP vs. IMAP page.

You can enter anything as the Account Description. It is recommended that you enter the email address you are currently configuring. Under Full Name, enter your name as you would like it to appear to recipients of your email. For Email Address, enter your full Email Address.

For the Incoming Mail Server enter mail.hrec.coop. The User Name is your full email address, including the domain. Fill the Password field unless you would like the client to prompt for your password every time it checks for new email.

The Outgoing Mail Server is again mail.hrec.coop. Check the Use Authentication box and enter the same User Name and Password you entered for the incoming server (your full email address including the domain, and your account password).

Verify the settings shown in the Account Summary window are correct. If they are, click Continue. Otherwise, Go Back and make the appropriate corrections.

Enter the Mail.app Preferences from the Mail menu.

Select Accounts from the top, then select the new account you created. Click Server Settings in the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) section.

Change the Server port to 587.

Click Ok and exit out of the preferences, saving changes when prompted. Apple Mail is now configured for your email account.
